Department of Education, Skills & Employment

Better information security

Overview

Chalfont assisted the Department of Education, Skills and Employment (DESE) to move staff to a Single Protected Desktop, improve cyber security and refresh their Information Management Strategy.

Challenge

The department was utilising two separate networks requiring users to undertake work in different domains and remember multiple logins. This presented a cyber security risk for the department and multiple portfolio agencies.

Process

Chalfont led engagement across all business-critical areas to design, develop and implement change management activities to support adoption of the new Protected Desktop capability, remove use of BYOD devices, and introduce multi-factor authentication.

An Information campaign promoted awareness of the importance of applying the correct information security markings to comply with Commonwealth security standards. Tailored communication, engagement, and training activities were developed in partnership with the internal Communications Team and Training Officer. This included a visual identity for the project, simple project roadmap to support implementation, key messages for CIO emails and intranet updates.

Stakeholder engagement workshops and information session complimented the extensive education materials including quick reference guides, knowledge-based articles and animated explainer videos.

Impact

The project was delivered on time with 7000 department and portfolio agency staff successfully transitioning to a single consolidated network. Processes were standardised, reducing staff burden and compliance with Essential 8 security requirements was improved.
